Review: Lufthansa business class Frankfurt to Dubai
This is a review of our recent Lufthansa 747-400 business class flight from Frankfurt to Dubai. We arrived into Frankfurt on Lufthansa from Copenhagen and had approximately 2 hrs layover before our onwards flight to Dubai. Upon arrival to Frankfurt, we made our way over towards the non-Schengen departure area from where our flight to Dubai was scheduled to depart from.
We arrived at the non-schengen area approximately 1 hours 30 minutes prior to departure and quickly made our way to the Lufthansa business class lounge located next to gate 24.
There was a short queue to enter the lounge, but after approximately 5 min our boarding passes were scanned and we were able to enter the lounge which was really busy. We struggled to find some seating, but at the end, we managed to find some seating towards the back end of the lounge. The layout is basically circular with food and drinks stations located in the middle all the way around and the seating area towards the windows again in a circular layout. The food selection is limited with some light dishes available along with salad and soup. Drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) are available for self-serve at the drinks stations. The lounge also has a small business center located next to the entrance and shower facilities.
Around 45 minutes before scheduled departure, we left the lounge and headed down to gate 24 which is located just outside the lounge entrance. Boarding had yet not commenced when we arrived at the gate, however within a few minutes boarding was announced with first and business class passenger boarding from a separate counter on the left side of the gate.
As soon as our boarding passes were scanned we headed down the jet bridge and entered the dedicated door for first and business class passenger. Upon entering the aircraft we were meet by a crew member who directed us towards our seats. This flight was operated by one of Lufthansa’s Boeing 747-400 aircraft with business class located on the lower deck at the forward part of the aircraft. This aircraft featured Lufthansa’s new business class product and we had chosen seat 2A and 2C which were literally in the nose of the plane. We settled into our seats and not long after one of the FA’s came around to offer a pre-departure drink with a choice of water, juice or champagne.
The new Lufthansa business class seats are all forward facing fully lie flat and are configured with two seats side by side. The seats are angled slightly pointing towards each other where the foot rests are located closely together. This can be a little awkward if you are travelling alone as you will be fairly close to your seat companion and lack privacy. Whilst I found the seats comfortable I certainly prefer the business class seats on the likes of Etihad, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines as these boost more privacy.
Around the time of scheduled departure, the Captain came on the PA providing details about the flight and weather conditions and shortly after we were taxiing towards the runway for departure. Take off was from runway 18 and after a fairly long takeoff roll, we were airborne. The climb up to cruising altitude was relatively smooth with only light turbulence.
As soon as the seatbelt signs were turned off the crew came around to take meal orders and offer something to drink. On this flight, we had the choice between three different starters, mains and two different desserts accompanied with choices of wine, champagne, beer or various soft drinks. The food was served approximately an hour into the flight and quality was quite good. As soon as I finished my meal I turned on the in-flight entertainment system which has a good selection of movies, tv shows, and music.
The crew on this flight was very friendly and helpful and was constantly making rounds in the cabin and were proactively asking if we required top up of drinks or anything else.
I watched a few movies and approximately 30 min prior to scheduled landing we commenced our descent and consequent approach into Dubai International Airport. We, fortunately, avoided any holding pattern and was cleared straight in for landing. Touch down was 10 min prior to our scheduled landing time and after 10 min of taxiing, we reach our gate at Terminal 1.
Overall the flight was good and very comfortable, the service was really good and we found the food to be of a really good quality. The ground experience is a bit underwhelming with packed lounges and limited food offerings. Would we fly Lufthansa business class again? Yes, ignoring the basic lounge facilities Lufthansa offers a solid hard and soft product onboard.
